Почему Индия не развернула Barak 8 или ракету Shaurya вместо покупки системы ПРО С-400?
Shaurya — это ракета с поверхности на поверхность. Это не хорошо для воздушного покрытия, как в случае с Barak-8 и S-400. Это делает его совершенно другим классом, от S-400 и Barak-8. - S-400 is known to be used on land and naval systems successfully[2] . Barak-8 is predominantly a naval system. Land based Barak 8 systems are in the trial phase now[3] . Thus S-400 gives India off the shelf access to a more reliable system.
- S-400 system can cover threats against India, emanating even from Space. But Barak-8 is known to cover only close range air borne threats.
- Indian Ballistic Missile Defence Systems (BMDS) already uses many Russian based components[4] . S-400 can be easily integrated to existing Indian systems. Most of the defence trainers are already familiar with the Russian systems. For Barak-8, learning curve is steep and integration is difficult when compared to S-400 systems.
- S-400 system is widely believed to be less costlier than other similar systems in the western world. So that makes it a good deal for India. [5] [6]

- S-400 (SA-21): $400 million per fire unit (8 launchers, 112 missiles, command and support vehicles) (estimate based on performance figures, larger missile load, etc)
- India has time tested relation with Russia. She has been the biggest importer of Russian(Soviet) arms for a long time. Russia under Putin is trying to reinvigorate her economy with the stimulus it gets from its military industrial complex[7] . At a time when Russia is showing its interests to conduct military exercises and sell weapons to Pakistan, it will be wise for India to spend some money on a good friend and help her out (Read as, Keep her with us).
- India can also hope for getting the manufacturing and maintenance license for S-400 system. This has happened in the case of Russian fighter jets in the past[8] . It can happen in the future also.
So buying S-400 missile defense system was a carefully calculated move by India, backed by its diplomatic, geopolitical and geostrategic interests.
