Apart from India; China, Turkey and Saudi Arabia are lining up to buy the missile defense system because of its extreme accuracy and lethality

The United States doesn’t want India to buy S-400 from Russia because

Firstly, the S-400 will strengthen Russia-India ties. Arms sales are usually foreign policy tools countries like the United States utilize to establish strong ties with South Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, U.A.E etc. Since the US is attempting to deviate India from partnership with Russia, the S-400 is one of the top obstacles to the US plan.

Secondly, The US also is seriously eyeing the rewarding Indian defense market and any major deals like the S-400 with Russia is a major roadblock. India is the largest weapons importer in the world over the last five years overall imports increased by 24% in the five-year period, accounting for nearly 12% of all global imports. It spent more than $100 billion, between 2008 – 2017, buying fighter jets, submarines, artillery guns and other weapons. Russia accounts for 62% India’s arms imports between 2013–17 5 thus impede US defense companies – Raytheon, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin e.t.c

Once India acquires and deploys the S-400 system along the India- Pakistan Border, the balance of power equation in South Asia will change. The S-400 system will increase the susceptibility of Pakistani Air force along the India-Pakistan border tipping the balance of power towards India. The United States does not want the strategic balance of power in South Asia to move towards India because the U.S. Military continues to have strong links with their Pakistani counterpart, and also India is viewed as a future economic rival to the United States.
